What is a Podiatrist?

podiatrist

A podiatrist, or DPM (Doctor of Podiatric Medicine), is a physician educated and trained to treat injuries and issues concerning your feet, ankles, and areas of the lower leg.

To become a podiatrist, one must complete 4 years of medical school and 3 years of residency to gain real-world experience in a hospital setting. Once those requirements are completed, some choose to gain further certifications from the ABFAS (American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery) in areas such as foot and ankle surgery.

Podiatrists can prescribe medication, request lab tests or X-rays, reset broken bones, and perform surgery. They also help alleviate or eliminate pain and discomfort due to conditions such as bunions, arthritis, heel pain, ingrown toenails, corns, calluses, fungal nails, hammertoes, flat feet, plantar warts, or athlete’s foot, just to name a few. They can also prescribe inserts, orthotics, and footwear, and can teach you stretches or exercises to strengthen your feet and ankles.
